A conceptual
artist in practice, Huang Yongping first gained fame in the 1980s with his
Dada-inspired group named Xiamen Dada, attempting to break free from all forms
of convention. An artist that enjoys pushing boundaries and destabilizing
the status quo, he is known for his conceptual work, such as the installation
‘A History of Chinese Painting’ and ‘A Concise History of
Modern Painting’ Washed in a Washing Machine for Two Minutes (1987 /
1993). Having moved to Paris, France in 1989, Huang has been active in the
international scene with a number of exhibitions including Un cane italiano
(2003), at Galerie Beaumontpublic in Luxembourg, HUANG Yongping (1997), at
De Appel, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, and Chinese Hand-Laundry (1994),
at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, USA. He has also participated
in numerous group exhibitions, including the 1998-99 American exhibition Inside
Out: New Chinese Art, and the 1999 Venice Biennale in Italy, representing
France.
